Bellandur floods, an obstacle for locals

On the 6th of September due to heavy rains, various parts of the Silicon Valley of India faced floods. Some of the locals claimed that this was caused due to improper drainage control by the local government and the overflowing of lakes nearby.

Many places in Bangalore City faced flooding but the area that was affected the most was a small stretch of road in front of Ecospace Tech Park, which is infamous for its always-present traffic. It was completely drowned. Many office employees were forced to sit on the walkover bridge and join their calls and meetings on Zoom. "My boss did not care if I was stuck in a flood or in traffic, he lives in America, so he was not bothered by my problems and called them stupid excuses," said Abijeeth Desai, an employee.

"Sitting in the traffic for that long, with the water flooding into my auto was a pain and I ended up catching a cold," said Priyadarshini, a local who was caught up in the traffic that was caused due to the floods. She had to wait in the stagnant water for almost three hours and had to take leave even though she was quite near to her office. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for a number of diseases.

As many as 10 people who were stuck in the traffic, ended up sick. Bangalore is a city with numerous lakes, which flooded over because of the heavy rains. The aquatic life that lived in these lakes flooded onto the streets. Police officers found fishes floating in the water that was flooding the road. Many were rescued and returned to their homes, but some were found dead.

Authorities lacked the resources to fix the situation immediately. The water was eventually drained out as they lifted the sluice gates at Bellandur lake letting water into Varthur lake and from there water was being let out towards Dakshina Pinakini to manage the floods says Raghuram, a member of Bellandur Rising, a social welfare group dedicated to looking after their neighborhood.
