Independent filmmakers, if technically strong, are unstoppable

Over-the-top (OTT) platforms have become popular post-COVID. While this has had a negative impact on large commercial filmmakers, small and individual filmmakers are benefiting from this the most.

Abhilash Shetty, a young filmmaker, who has received national and international recognition for Koli Taal, who debuted in directing with this film, says OTT is the future of cinema. He says the theatres attract only large-scale movies. Independent films have a better scope and audience on OTT platforms.

Mr.Shetty debuted in direction with an independent film titled Koli Taal, meaning ‘chicken curry’ in Kannada. The film brings to the screen a typical village household from Karnataka. The film has been screened in many film festivals including the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, Indus Valley Film Festival of Chandigarh, and Suchitra Suvarma Sambhrama at Dayananda Sagar University, Bangalore.

As a cinephile from a very young age, Mr Shetty began his journey in the film field after quitting his job in Bangalore. He went on to learn shooting, editing and direction by himself and shot a few short films before making Koli Taal.

Referring to the struggles of an independent filmmaker, he said, “I love doing all this. Direction, editing, shooting and all. And once we are technically strong, we are unstoppable.”
