Bengaluru. 9 March 2022: It is not only Indian students who have been caught in the
crossfire of the Ukraine-Russia war. There are Indian sailors as well who have been
stranded not on land but on the seas.
As many as 32 Indian sailors were evacuated from Mykolaiv port in Ukraine.
They were aboard a cargo ship named MV Haci Emine Ana.
Of the 32 sailors, eight were Indian. All eight Indian sailors were evacuated. They
are currently staying at a shelter, a building that earlier housed an office, in
Bucharest, Romania.
Sudip, an Indian sailor, who belongs to Kolkata, West Bengal, said the Indian Embassy had helped him and 32 other Indian sailors evacuate from Mykolaiv port in
Ukraine, which he described as “a very dangerous” place to stay in.
The shelter at Bucharest has all facilities and they were not charged for the travel to
the shelter.
He said, “The (Indian) Embassy sent a team to the nearest borders (from where he
was).”
The 12 Turkish sailors were evacuated to Odessa with help from their embassy,
according to Sudip.
