Bengaluru, 25 February 2022:
As many as 40 people from Karnataka are living in a bunker in Ukraine, according to a student from Karnataka, who is also in the same bunker. Rakshit Gani from Athani Taluk, Belgaum district, an MBBS student at Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) in Kharkiv, Ukraine, said that he was in a bunker with 200 other people of whom 40 were from Karnataka.
He said that the Indian Embassy is helping them get to Poland by road after which they would board a flight to India from there.
Many of his friends in Lviv escaped to Poland with the help of another person. One student from Karnataka along with his friends tried to escape but they could not because the Poland border was closed.
The 150-200 students have been staying in the basement of their hostel for the past two days. It is snowing and the temperature is 0 degrees. Heaters are switched off. Everyone has their jackets and blankets though. There are some mattresses laid out, but there is very little place to sit.
The students of KNMU are being told to stay put in familiar places by the Indian Embassy. They have not had any further orders from them. The main concern of students at Kharkiv is that no evacuation plans have been made for them. Currently, only border towns like Kyiv, Lviv, and Odessa are being evacuated. As of now, they have filled out a form from the Embassy asking for their details.
