Master the basics to become a journalist, says veteran scribe

Bengaluru, 8 November 2023: Students of journalism must possess basic knowledge about every field if they want to become journalists. That was one among several tips that Lakshmana Kuchi, Founder, of Southonomix.com, a website dedicated to tracking economic and social changes in South India. and former chief of bureaux (South), Hindustan Times, shared with students.




He was speaking to students of all three years of B.A.Journalism and Mass Communication, at College of Journalism and Mass Communication (CJMC), Dayananda Sagar University (DSU), in the city on Wednesday.


Delivering the talk as guest lecture, he said, “Journalism is not rocket science. It is important to master the basics.”


Mr.Kuchi shared his experience of having worked in political reporting over decades in various cities including Delhi.




He answered several questions from students. When queried upon the pitfalls of reporting on politics, he said that political reporting sometimes requires writing wisely. He said, “I had to work smartly to avoid controversy.”


He also emphasised the importance of writing skills as it is required in any stream students choose to pursue and is not restricted to only journalism.



He believes that it is essential to create a network of people and know the importance of cultivating these relationships. Working as a journalist gave him the opportunity to form several connections and travel extensively on work.


Students presented Mr. Kuchi with the first edition of CJMC Chronicle (“CC”), the student publication of CJMC, DSU.
