Ramzan, faith, fervour and food

Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. In this holy month,

Muslims all over the world fast from dawn till dusk. The month of fasting

begins with the sighting of the crescent moon.


Muslims, during this month, eat Sehri (pre-dawn meal) and break their fast

(Roza) after sunset. Various delicacies are prepared during this month

which not only provides energy to the people who fast, but also is an

opportunity to know more about different foods.

Masjids in many parts of the world host Iftaar for people who fast. A variety

of foods and drinks are served, which is funded by the administration of

Masjid.


One such place to visit during Ramzan, for food and beverages, is Mosque

Road (Frazer Town) in Bangalore. Hundreds of food stalls are set up on the

roads and over the footpaths which serve various vegetarian and non-

vegetarian food. Apart from this, various drinks are also served to the

people. Not only Muslims, but people from other communities also line up at

food stalls to have various Ramzan-special

Arbeen, who runs a food stall at Mosque Road and sells various

delicious foods for Rozedars (those who fast), starts preparing food

by 2 pm and the stall is ready by 4 pm to serve the food. She said that her

daily turnover is about Rs 10,000.


Not only regular snacks are sold at that place, but shoes, scents, and dresses are also

showcased and sold to many passers-by.

Caramel-pudding sweet, chicken cheese rolls, camel meat, beef, Patthar

ghost, and kebab is one of the most eaten food items by the people. Altaf,

who runs the shop which sells the above items, said that his family has

been in this business for years and they earn a living through this.


Vismaya (25), who is a Graduate student from Christ University, has put up

a stall that serves Roohfza sharbat, homemade sweets, and chocolate

her friend, who wants to be anonymous, said that she has paid Rs 80,000

to rent that place. Her daily turnover is about Rs 7,000.

There is a big market for fish, prawns, tiger prawns, and crabs which attracts

hundreds of seafood lovers. The above foods are kept marinated and

ready to cook.

Kaushaliya and her friend Rahul tried their hand at Punjabi Tandoori

Chicken which they liked the most. They added that they are visiting this

place for the first time and got to know their friends.

If you are interested, Mosque Road in Bangaluru is a must-visit place. The

special Ramzan items are sold there from noon to 4 am.
